U can't play maple on the virtual XP mode u download from microsoft. It has problems with graphics/sound , thats why it is giving u that error.
Did u try running it in compatibility mode? Vista perhaps? I had this problem until i added it to my firewall exception and run as admin in vista ...

FTL is completely safe.. i just lvl-ed my priest to 82. and my spear man to 68. I'm purely illegit. hoping to get it to 120 soon :P
