The ratio of Jim’s sweets to chocolates became 1:7 and the ratio of Ken’s sweets to chocolates became 1:4. How many sweets did Ken buy?

Let C be the number of choclates Jim had and S be the number of sweets Ken had, after they gave away half of their sweets/choclates.
7(S-12)=C
7S-84=C-(1)
4S=C-18
4S+18=C -(2)
(1)=(2),
4S+18=7S-84
102=3S
S=34
2S=68
Ken bought 68 sweets.
However, this method is "illegal" cause p6 were not taught stimultaneous equations yet. They had to use models, or use only 1 variable in algebra.
Let S be the number of sweets Ken gave away.
7(S-12)=4S+18
7S-84=4S+18
3S=102
S=34
2S=64
