Btw, GIMP is really a great software. We can see how fast it load on starting the program not like Photoshop (took about 30sec+). GIMP might not be a user friendly to whom adapting too much time on photoshop, but, this is a fact, GIMP can create more nice effect and images. And what the most important thing is, it works really fast on rendering effect and uses less processes.
the reason PS took about 30sec as you told(mind took 10-depending on your current computer load, your HDD buffer and such)is because that PS loads lots of plugins, if you notice, GIMP uses lesser plugins than PS, that's why PS load lot slower than GIMP
