actually it's open source, so it can be for linux and xp as well, depending on who coded it
hie, my first post in this forum. Actually, GIMP is not only an open source. It is Multi Platform which using GTK Runtime is the reason why GIMP are able to use in windows.

Btw, GIMP is really a great software. We can see how fast it load on starting the program not like Photoshop (took about 30sec+). GIMP might not be a user friendly to whom adapting too much time on photoshop, but, this is a fact, GIMP can create more nice effect and images. And what the most important thing is, it works really fast on rendering effect and uses less processes.

:D
hmm not bad you know much stuffs yeah....
the reason PS took about 30sec as you told(mind took 10-depending on your current computer load, your HDD buffer and such)is because that PS loads lots of plugins, if you notice, GIMP uses lesser plugins than PS, that's why PS load lot slower than GIMP

No offense, but still, Photoshop developers should think the mostly user needs. They dont have to load too many plugins on the startup, and maybe they can load the plugin on user demands, or maybe choose how core you want use the program on startup. Isnt that way is nicer rather then need to wait the program open very long? And actually, I used photoshop since 1998. But, i changed to GIMP at 2005, why?

1) Im not a designer who want to make gfx for live.
2) I dont want pay Adobe for nothing.
3) GIMP got all i need as a home users.
4) Professional designers only use Photoshop for the quality sake and filters.
5) A real artist wont use digital image, they use brush and papers for their art.

So the topic "GIMP or Photoshop", is depending on user needs. Home user using PS is like insane to buy the licensed, and in Malaysia/Singapore it is not that cheap. :)

People got many site of view, and this is from mine.

i uses both GIMP and Photoshop CS3.

Both are powerful at there own ways. Photoshop have layer mask which makes it easier to fade image also good for nose job.

Photoshop CS3 need a strong PC with at lease SSE2 (SSE3 for better performance) which AMD Athlon XP user will not be able to use it.

While GIMP and be use with a PC with just MMX and SSE1, which most PC have starting from Intel Pentium 133MHz.

GIMP is good at hair color, photoshop is good for plastic surgery. All have pros and cons.
